Position Summary

The Master Production Planner is responsible for translating customer demand and business priorities into an executable production plan that supports customer commitments, efficient manufacturing flow, material availability, and overall operational performance.

This role serves as the primary planning link between Sales Operations, Production, Procurement, Inventory, Quality, and other supporting functions. The Master Production Planner receives validated demand requirements from Sales Operations and develops production schedules based on customer priorities, available inventory, incoming product, material availability, production capacity, process requirements, and operational constraints.

The Master Production Planner must therefore maintain visibility across both incoming supply and internal production requirements to ensure the correct products move through the correct processes at the correct time to support customer demand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate validated customer demand, backlog, forecasts, and business priorities into a detailed and executable master production schedule.
  • Partner closely with Sales Operations to understand customer requirements, order priorities, demand changes, expected future demand, and required delivery dates.
  • Develop and maintain production schedules that balance customer requirements with available inventory, incoming supply, material availability, production capacity, labor availability, process constraints, and operational priorities.
  • Maintain visibility to incoming suppressor inventory from external manufacturing partners and incorporate expected receipts into production planning decisions.
  • Plan the flow of product through required internal processes, which may include blasting, surface preparation, painting, or other finishing processes, accessory installation, final configuration, packaging, inspection, and shipment preparation.
  • Ensure production schedules support the correct finished product configuration, SKU, accessories, customer requirements, and order priorities.
  • Determine production requirements necessary to fulfill open customer orders and reduce or eliminate back orders.
  • Develop recovery plans for past-due or backordered customer demand and communicate required actions across Operations, Sales Operations, Procurement, and Production.
  • Coordinate with Production leadership and Production Control to develop achievable daily and weekly production priorities.
  • Release, sequence, and maintain production orders or work orders in accordance with the approved production plan.
  • Continuously evaluate production priorities as demand, inventory, material availability, incoming supply, capacity, or operational conditions change.
  • Identify production constraints before they affect customer commitments and coordinate appropriate countermeasures or escalation.
  • Provide clear visibility to Procurement regarding future material and component requirements based on the production plan.
  • Identify material shortages, timing gaps, or supply risks that may affect scheduled production and work with Procurement to develop recovery plans.
  • Ensure Procurement has appropriate visibility to both near-term production requirements and longer-term demand trends.
  • Partner with Inventory and Warehouse teams to understand available inventory, incoming receipts, component availability, accessory availability, and other materials required to complete customer orders.
  • Coordinate planning priorities when common suppressor platforms, components, accessories, packaging, or other materials support multiple finished SKUs or customer requirements.
  • Evaluate opportunities to configure or allocate available inventory in ways that maximize customer fulfillment while minimizing unnecessary production changes or excess inventory.
  • Monitor work-in-process and production progress against the master schedule.
  • Identify schedule deviations and work with Production leadership to understand root causes, customer impact, and appropriate recovery actions.
  • Adjust production schedules when required while maintaining visibility to the downstream impact of changes.
  • Maintain appropriate schedule stability and prevent unnecessary priority changes, expedites, and production disruptions.
  • Communicate clearly when requested changes cannot be accommodated without affecting other customer commitments or operational priorities.
  • Support production prioritization decisions when customer demand exceeds available supply, materials, or capacity.
  • Provide Sales Operations with accurate production timing, expected completion dates, constraint information, and recovery plans for customer orders.
  • Maintain planning parameters within the ERP/MRP system, including lead times, lot sizes, production assumptions, planning horizons, safety stock or other relevant master data as assigned.
  • Monitor system-generated planning signals and apply appropriate business judgment rather than relying solely on automated recommendations.
  • Support planning for new product introductions, product transitions, customer-specific configurations, major programs, promotions, or significant changes in demand.
  • Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly planning and operational review processes.
  • Develop and maintain planning dashboards, reports, schedules, shortage reports, backlog recovery plans, and other tools necessary to provide visibility to the organization.
  • Monitor key planning and production performance indicators and identify trends requiring corrective action.
  • Continuously improve production planning processes, planning parameters, scheduling methods, reporting, and cross-functional communication.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in production planning, master scheduling, materials planning, supply planning, manufacturing planning, production control, or a closely related function.
  • Experience developing and maintaining production schedules within a manufacturing, assembly, finishing, distribution, or product-based operating environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of production planning principles including capacity, material availability, lead times, inventory, work-in-process, production sequencing, backlog, and customer delivery requirements.
  • Experience using ERP and/or MRP systems to plan production, evaluate requirements, release production orders, and maintain planning information.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate customer demand and forecasts into executable production requirements.
  • Experience working with Bills of Material, routings, work orders, inventory transactions, production lead times, or similar manufacturing master data.
  • Experience identifying material shortages and coordinating with Procurement or Supply Chain teams to resolve production constraints.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate large amounts of demand, inventory, supply, and production information.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel or comparable analytical tools.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound planning decisions in a fast-paced environment with changing customer requirements.
  • Strong understanding of the relationship between customer demand, inventory, materials, capacity, production, and customer delivery performance.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate priorities, constraints, risks, and required actions across multiple levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to develop recovery plans when production or supply conditions do not support the original schedule.
  • Ability to make fact-based decisions and appropriately challenge requests that would negatively affect broader production or customer commitments.
  • Strong attention to detail combined with the ability to understand broader operational and business impacts.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in production planning, master scheduling, supply planning, or production control.
  • Experience in the firearms, suppressor, defense, aerospace, military, tactical products, or other regulated manufacturing industries.
  • Experience planning operations involving externally manufactured products followed by internal finishing, processing, assembly, configuration, packaging, or final fulfillment.
  • Experience in make-to-order, assemble-to-order, configure-to-order, postponement, or mixed-mode manufacturing environments.
  • Experience managing common components or base products that can be converted into multiple finished SKUs or customer configurations.
  • Experience with serialized products or other inventory requiring enhanced traceability and control.
  • Experience planning constrained materials, shared production resources, or products with competing customer priorities.
  • Experience developing and executing backlog recovery plans.
  • Experience with Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP), Integrated Business Planning (IBP), demand planning, supply planning, or similar cross-functional planning processes.
  • Experience supporting new product introductions and product transitions.
  • Experience with SAP or SAP Business One.
  • Experience managing and improving MRP planning parameters, lead times, safety stocks, lot sizes, Bills of Material, routings, and production master data.
